Viburnum opulus roseum: timeless radiance in the garden Few shrubs have as many assets as viburnums. Easy to grow, most of them are hardy , grow quickly, flower spectacularly, often bear abundant fruit , and come in gleaming autumn hues. Some even have evergreen foliage, which is much appreciated in winter.
They grow back easily, even if you plant them in flower; all you need to do is follow a few simple tips. Normally white, they turn more or less pink at the end of flowering, a feature that is increasingly sought after in new selections. The only exception is the variety ‘Onondaga’, whose pink inflorescences are enhanced by purple foliage.
Even more attractive are combinations with white variegated foliage , which are particularly successful when they are also tinged with pink, as with ‘Pink Ice’ spirea or ‘Hakuro-Nishiki’ willow. Take inspiration from this behaviour and plant them under small, lightly shaded trees , or in copses accompanied, for example, by hawthorns or Chinese dogwoods which follow them.
All you need to do is clear a fairly large root ball, which need not be very deep , to successfully move a large plant.Pruning Viburnums can withstand radical pruning , which involves cutting off all the branches at ground level , but small thinning cuts can avoid any problems.
