“It’s incredibly difficult,” he says. “I know the reasoning for this in Hull East but I don’t know the answer to what we do to improve that, apart from improving people’s lives and them seeing a difference.” Trevor Mumby runs Trev’s Heel Bar, a shoe repair, key cutting and hardware shop. He says he’s unlikely to vote in the general election. “I very much doubt it this time. I haven’t made up my mind. I normally vote Conservative and I have done all my life.”So what’s changed his mind? “Because no matter what they say they don’t come up with the goods.”
Kirsty Green, who runs Craft Cottage, a greeting cards and personalised gifts shop a few doors down, feels similarly disillusioned. She isn’t sure that she’s going to vote either. “I’m on the bench at the minute. I’m undecided, just because sometimes they say stuff and you’re falsely led into voting. They say they’re going to do something and then you vote for them and it never materialises.”She didn’t vote in 2019 for the same reason but has voted in the past. “I went between different parties.
“I think there should be more help for small businesses and they need to stop some of the big superstores taking over large areas so it gives us small businesses a bit of a chance. When I walk out of my door I can see three shops that are shut down and that’s just within a short view of my shop, and it is quite disheartening.”
