Over the past few years, pressure on NHS cancer services has been mounting and multiple targets have been regularly missed As a result, officials are set to announce changes in a matter of days 🔎 Analysis by PMGallagher1

for patients to see a specialist within two weeks has divided health experts.

A new “faster diagnosis standard” will propose that patients who have been urgently referred by a GP should have cancer ruled out or receive a diagnosis within 28 days. A consultation on the proposals began last year, when the NHS highlighted that the current two-week target set no expectation of when patients should receive test results or have a confirmed diagnosis.

More than 6,500 people who started cancer treatment in June 2023 had waited longer than two months since their urgent referral, according to latest NHS England figures published last week. If the 62-day target was met, around 4,200 additional patients would have begun treatment on time.this year was the worst on record for cancer care

Cancer care, like all areas of the health service, has struggled in recent years so to years of austerity,and, in more recent years, the effects of the pandemic which has made it harder for people to see a GP or specialist in a timely manner. Thousands of people are being left in limbo as waits for vital cancer tests and treatment remain unacceptably high. Cancer Research UK believes the new proposals will lead to faster diagnosis and treatment.
