“We had brought the pandemic-induced backlog down by around 2,000 cases in a year before strike action began to undermine this progress,” the MoJ spokesman said. “We are increasing criminal legal aid spending to £1.2bn which will see the typical criminal barrister earn £7,000 more a year.”One in four survivors of rape are withdrawing from cases due to the stress of waits of four years or more for a court date , a leading victim support charity has revealed.
Ms Handy added: “From the moment a survivor reports a rape, they are entering a system stacked against them. The focus on determining a victim’s so-called credibility rather than investigating the suspect leads to huge amounts of data requests and subsequent information to sort through.
