The reason for No 10’s decision to go early may well lie behind Wednesday’s inflation figures, which at 2.3 per cent showed headline inflation was close to the Bank of England’s 2 per cent target. It comes swiftly after the economy moved out of technical recession and back into growth, ending the economic turmoil of the last couple of years.
But crucially, the financial markets reacted to the inflation figures by forecasting an interest rate cut may not happen until much later in the year, meaning the Tories could not rely on cheaper borrowing costs to boost their electoral chances. And there is the belief within Mr Sunak’s inner circle that once voters are given the chance to compare the Prime Minister and his Tory party with his Labour counterparts that the Conservatives could stage the mother of all upsets and if not win the general election, then deny Sir Keir an outright majority.
