The longer the Prime Minister waits, the more chances plotters and crises have to stop him in his tracks

The Prime Minister is presumably not daft, though: he must know that things are not going to get that much better, and that the next few months will yield even more difficulty than he’s seen in the past few weeks.Yesterday, another minister resigned and announced he would be quitting parliament whenever that election is. The soon-to-be-former Armed Forces minister James Heappey has been lobbying colleagues privately and increasingly in public over the need for higher defence spending.
What little legislation there is won’t keep the Conservative Party together, either. A frequent complaint from Tory MPs is that they still have no idea what this current iteration of their party in Government stands for, and that all Sunak seems to be personally passionate about is his smoking ban. The latter will improve before an autumn election, and at that point, he cannot blame lefty peers or bishops, but will have to show the policy can stand on its own two feet –
