When Robert Saleh saw the weather Thursday morning, he made a quick decision to pull quarterback Aaron Rodgers from the Jets’ joint practice with the Commanders.
“He’s taken every rep in practice, so I felt like it was just unnecessary, heightened environment, unfamiliar foes in terms of taking care of one another,” Saleh said. “I just didn’t want to expose him to it, if it was a game, if it was a practice, if it was clean outside, he would’ve practiced today. Call it overprotection, but it was just the decision I made.”
There have been no restrictions on him in practice, but Saleh opted to be safe with the franchise QB Thursday.“He pushed back. He wanted to go,” Saleh said. “But in the grand scheme of things, we’re trying to think forward thinking with regards to Week 1, and we’ve got a long way for that. We’ll have other opportunities coming up with Carolina and the Giants.” Rodgers won’t play in the preseason opener against the Commanders on Saturday or in next week’s game against the Panthers.
“The good news is, obviously he’s a lot further ahead than we anticipated,” Saleh said. “If I’m not mistaken, he was out at individual and some route running stuff early, so that’s going to kind of be his progression.
