A new weight-loss drug could offer hope to many patients – even if the researchers fumbled a new psychological study, writes StuartJRitchie
Although it didn’t work for everyone , semaglutide showed benefits for a substantial majority of participants.
But surprisingly, they didn’t use a standard statistical correction to reduce the chances of false-positive results – findings that appear real, but are actually just due to flukes. It’s possible that the results they observed about cravings were just due to random statistical noise. Which leads to the second downside: the cost. At the moment, semaglutide is pricey: it’s not yet available for weight loss on the NHS, and costs something like £150-£200 per week for the recommended dose. If it’s to be used indefinitely, that’s quite a bill.
