As a One Nation Tory, he faces a strategic dilemma
Tom Tugendhat arrives to give a speech in Westminster about the riots and social breakdown in Britain is a double-edged sword. It greatly eases his path through the early rounds to the final two, but it then makes it more likely that he will lose to whichever right-winger he faces.
But it presents the shadow security minister with a strategic dilemma. He needs to hold on to those MPs to secure his position and see off the challenge from, the other serious contender running from the One Nation wing . But how many such subjects can he find? It is clearly a problem that concerns the candidate. Kicking off his campaign in thelast month, he took a much less convincing approach: pretending the Conservatives agree on everything, and therefore that the leadership contest is “not about” such things as “The ECHR. Gender. Tax rates. Defence spending. Net Zero.”
