A new government report hones in on techniques needed to thwart the onslaught of malicious AI
, and new polling confirms the government’s fears about the potential consequential impact of deepfakes in an election year — namely, how theirwhen left unchecked by media and social media platforms could erode trust in elections, spread disinformation, undermine national security and empower bad actors. of 1,000 adults surveyed in early March, most U.S. adults were hard-pressed to detect whether AI or an actual person had created five out of the eight videos they were shown.
Authoritative news sources are taking further steps to increase viewer confidence in online media by publishing cryptographic signatures with their content to confirm its authenticity. Some are even writing these assets to the blockchain, the intent behind Fox Corp.’s that as deepfakes become more sophisticated and prolific, both detection and authentication methods will need to be used in tandem to be completely effective and combat the negative effects of deepfakes.
Any distribution platform where the content appears downstream, such as a social media site, can read the watermark. And if the content cannot be authenticated immediately, one can follow a link to access the original, authentic version that has its cryptographic signatures intact. This enables authentic content to be presented consistently with provable traceability back to its source, thus bolstering trust in media and relegating deceptive content to the sidelines.
While OpenAI intends to limit election-related misinformation, my fear is that will not be the case for long. Other tech companies may not be far behind in producing their own advanced text-to-video tools — potentially allowing anyone in the world to quickly create videos distributed across the internet that are fake but look and sound realistic.
While no single method will solve all the identification problems, the GAO clearly believes more needs to be done, and each method devised can play a different but vital role in solving a key part of the deepfake issue in the critical months ahead.
