A word from our Editor
Of course, there are legal reasons why arrested people are not normally named before charge and details of their background not published. It’s a serious libel if that person is subsequently released without charge, or even if charged, some of those background details previously published could eventually prejudice a criminal trial. Especially one as high profile as this, where coverage seems to be everywhere.
Some editors and newsdesks make the decision to name after arrest in some cases if they feel they have the right name and that is entirely their call. I respect that, but it is not the right decision for us as the publication that has served Nottingham for 150 years.Ever since the news about this horrific incident broke on Tuesday morning, we have always had the victims at the front of our minds. We don’t think the arrested person deserves to overshadow their tributes at this point in time.
We also want to make sure what we publish is accurate and not based on speculation. Our reporters are the ones who will still be here next month, next year and beyond and we hold the trust our readers place in us very dearly. Of course, if the arrested person is charged, we’ll then name them and follow the case through court. We are ready and waiting for that moment because we want to see someone brought to justice for these crimes, just as you do.Thank you for all your comments and tributes up to this point. And if you see one of our reporters out and about, take the time to tell them how you feel - because we are feeling it too.
