The transmission to a farmer from an infected dairy cow is thought to be different from previous animal-to-human infections for a number of reasons and is causing concerns among scientists

Photographer: Farm Images Provider: Universal Images Group via Getty Source: Universal Images Group Editorial Copyright: Wayne Hutchinson / www.farm-images.co.ukThe patient reported eye redness, consistent with conjunctivitis, as their only symptom, and is recovering after being treated with an antiviral drug for flu.

Previous infections of people are all thought to be the result of close contact with infected birds, droplets of their bodily fluid – such as those generated during defeathering processes – or other contaminated material such as bird faeces. But they say this is thought to be the first case of non-bird animal-to-human transmission of avian flu since the H5N1 subtype emerged in 1996.It is thought – but not confirmed – that cows in the US have been passing the virus between each other – and that, in turn, could be the first time a species other than a bird has passed the flu between one and other .

It is unclear how they became sick, but it now seems that the virus may be spreading among the animals, according to the US Department of Agriculture, which has concluded that “transmission between cattle cannot be ruled out”.
