Xi Jinping’s Moscow visit to see his ally Vladimir Putin is a high visibility counter to Paul Keating’s defence of China and his claims AUKUS is unnecessary, writes Jennifer Hewett.

It hardly seems coincidence Xi Jinping will visit Vladimir Putin in Moscow the week after Anthony Albanese joined Joe Biden and Rishi Sunak in San Diego to announce details of their AUKUS partnership.

But the implicit corollary has always been how China’s behaviour has changed – particularly the massive increase in its military forces and territorial claims over the past decade. “The maintenance of the rules-based order as we understand it, freedom of navigation, freedom of overflight, is completely in Australia’s interest. And we need to make sure that we have a capability which can back up that interest.”There is no evidence yet that last week’s grand AUKUS announcement has derailed the recent modest improvement in diplomatic and trade relations between China and Australia.
