Struggling Australians will be able to pick up the phone to access a free new digital mental health service whenever they need help, under the federal government’s main response to years of demand for better mental health support.
The government will also rebrand its Head to Health service centres as “Medicare Mental Health Centres”, which offer free walk-in access to a psychiatrist or psychologist for people with moderate to severe mental health needs, and give them a $30 million boost over four years. The money is part of the $8.5 billion that Health Minister Mark Butler last weekend promised would be spent on new health initiatives.
