Sougat Mukherjee died in Mumbai in 2023 after being falsely accused of murdering Tracey Wilde in 1997.

The widow of a man who was cleared of murdering a Glasgow woman plans to sue Scottish authorities after her husband's life was 'irreversibly destroyed' by the case.

Sougat Mukherjee died in Mumbai in 2023 after being accused of murdering Tracey Wilde, who had been working as a prostitute, in 1997. Prosecutors spent four years trying to extradite the 44-year-old after his arrest in the Indian city. Sougat's wife Sapna, told the BBC that she is seeking compensation and an Indian government inquiry after the dad of three's life 'imploded'.

The 45-year-old says that her husband never recovered from the stigma and turned to alcohol before his death from acute liver cirrhosis in 2023. Takeaway boss Zhi Min Chen, 44, pled guilty to strangling Tracy Wylde, 21, in her city flat at the High Court in Glasgow in 2019. Chinese-born Chen was collared for Tracy's murder after DNA samples he gave following an alleged assault in Cowcaddens matched samples found when Tracy's body was discovered, reports the Record.

The dad-of-two was jailed for a minimum of 20 years. However, appeal judges later cut his sentence, ruling that he should serve a minimum of 16 years before applying for parole. Following his conviction, Tracy's family reacted with sadness that her mum Fay is not alive to see justice prevail. She passed from bowel cancer before the trial.

Tracy's sister Bernadette, 34, said her mum would be 'relieved' and 'delighted' that her daughter's killer has finally been snared. She said: 'It's the end of a long road for us all.

' Sougat Mukherjee was a teenage student in Glasgow when Tracy was murdered at her Barmulloch flat in November 1997. He was identified as a suspect 16 years later after a cold-case review and tracked down to India, where he was arrested and bailed. Red tape held up his extradition. Sapna has appealed to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to back her bid to sue Police Scotland and the COPFS.

Police Scotland told the BBC that it did not comment on legal proceedings, and the Crown Office added that it gave 'careful consideration to reports submitted by the police'.
