RAF veteran William Ronald died after being struck by the refuse vehicle while out cycling near the village of Cleish, Fife, in May 2018, leaving behind his wife and three children.
A Scots widow who lost her husband after he was hit by a bin lorry believes council chiefs 'would have done more if they hit a dog'. Katrina Ronald has blasted Perth and Kinross Council for their complete lack of empathy following the death of 46-year-old William.
She said: "I felt like everyone was saying William, someone who devoted his life to his country, didn’t matter. With no prosecution the council dug their heels in, treated us with absolute defiance and basically said ‘your husband is 100 percent to blame so go away’. She teamed up with Digby Brown Solicitors but negotiations with the local authority soon broke down. On one occasion, the council’s insurance company failed to attend a scheduled meeting. The civil action was later escalated to a jury at the Court of Session in Edinburgh.
"I could not accept that someone would lay 100 percent of the blame at William’s feet so for me the court case was not about proving William was right but about proving the council was wrong. And we did that. We now have a black and white ruling to prove the council was wrong in their argument and I feel vindicated for that.
Top news stories today Katrina has now urged others going through similar court battles to "ignore the naysayers" and persevere to get justice for their loved ones. Innes Laing, Partner at Digby Brown Solicitors in Kirkcaldy, led the legal action that helped the Ronald family secure answers.
