Nathan Wiffen also competes at world level in swimming while their older brother Ben is a swim coach in Co Fermanagh
One final stroke, one final push for the wall and Daniel Wiffen ’s red light came on. The colour of the medal was gold. His arms were aching, his lungs nearly empty, but nothing was going to stop him on a famous night in Paris.
Nathan is his training partner for life, his best friend and housemate. And his fellow YouTube star. The twins live together, train together and both study at Loughborough University in England. Nathan finished fourth in the 1500m freestyle finals at the recent European Championships himself. Their older brother Ben Wiffen is head coach of Enniskillen Lakelanders swimming club in Fermanagh.
At the final turn it looked like anyone’s race as Italian Gregorio Paltrinieri led with 50 metres to go. Then Wiffen got to work, hunting him down and storming to victory. Wiffen had not faced Finke when he won the world 800m final in Doha. This was a chance to settle that.
