Fans of Wigan Athletic have expressed deep sorrow and left heartfelt tributes for Darren Orme , a beloved supporter whose body was tragically found after a 19-day search. Darren's connection to the club and the town ran deep, evident in the messages left around the Dave Whelan statue outside the club's ground, The Brick Community Stadium.
A shirt bearing the number 54, Darren's age, was draped over the statue's base, alongside bouquets of flowers, blue balloons, scarves, and shirts, signifying his unwavering allegiance to Wigan Athletic and the town's other sporting icon, Wigan Warriors. One heartfelt message read, 'Red or Blue. A Wiganer through and through. God bless Darren,' highlighting his devotion to both the football and rugby league teams that defined the town's sporting spirit. Darren's disappearance on March 5 sparked an outpouring of support, with dozens of Wiganers joining community search efforts in the days that followed. Despite their best efforts, Police announced on Monday (March 24) that a body had been recovered from the River Douglas near Stadium Way, close to Darren's beloved Latics' ground.Darren's passing has left a profound void within the Wigan Athletic family. In a statement released on Monday, a club spokesperson expressed their devastation and extended condolences to Darren’s family and friends. Sarah Guilfoyle, the club's managing director, added on X: 'Rest assured, we’re working with supporter groups and Darren’s family to ensure we arrange a proper and fitting tribute. 'We’ll communicate this in due course. Darren will be fondly remembered by everyone associated with the club, we’re devastated.' Fan clubs and individuals recounted fond memories of Darren, describing him as a fixture at matches and a beloved member of the Wigan Athletic community. To honor Darren's memory, Wigan Athletic will hold a minute's applause at their home fixture against Barnsley on Saturday, March 29, while Wigan Warriors will hold a minute's applause at their game against Salford on Sunday. Fans are encouraged to pay their respects by laying flowers, shirts, and scarves at The Brick Community Stadium alongside Dave Whelan’s statue, and a Book of Condolences will be available at the Stadium Reception
