New watfordfc boss speaks highly of the club’s greatest manager of all time
“I was brought up as a young player at Southampton by a very wise and knowledgeable football man in Lawrie McMenemy, and what I experienced there was very similar to what Watford had here: an incredibly knowledgeable, charismatic man who was an outstanding football manager that this club shot to fame with.
“If we can get it going, I know the supporters will get right behind the players, and the players will understand just how much the football club means to the supporters.” At 55, Wilder is significantly younger than Taylor, and so his on-field experiences of him are as a player that came up against teams he managed.“I know the respect and high esteem everyone held him in, particularly here at Watford and also at Villa.
“He was so well thought of in the football fraternity. I’ve been to so many League Managers’ Association events and you see the ‘inner circle’ of the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Walter Smith, Lawrie McMenemy, Jim Smith, and Graham was hugely respected and admired by his contemporaries and his colleagues in the game.Wilder said he is someone who studies the game, past and present, in any spare time he has.
