A practically inevitable Y2K trend has arrived. It’s time to try, or perhaps rediscover, the suit-less tie.

A key player in the original reclamation of the tie back in the Noughties, Miley, or should I say Hannah Montana, was known for layering accessories, providinginspiration for any tween with a blossoming interest in clothes. Seeing Miley Cyrus channel the tie in 2021 over a busy sweater, blackout shades, and large gold hoops – even as a punkish way to jazz up an airport ensemble – felt boundary-pushing.
As any good investigative journalist should, I took the matter to my Instagram followers. Asked if they were ready for the return of the tie in a Stories poll, the results were initially neck and neck, until a resounding “no’’ took hold, finishing at 38 per cent for its return, and 62 per cent against. Perhaps my follower base isn’t as fashion forward as anticipated. Deciding this wasn’t over, I looked in more detail at who was voting, and why.
One friend, a 27-year-old fashion stylist, sent an unprompted DM: “Pass, me the ear stretcher. I’m so ready to listen to Evanescence all over again.” I noticed a meeting of minds in the “yes” camp – those with nostalgic memories of it the first time around, and Gen-Zers wanting to be first on the next Y2K trend.. In his most recent collections, both as a part of his eponymous label and in his role as menswear artistic director at Fiorucci, the designer has finished looks with knotted ties.
