EXCLUSIVE: Former Strictly star Will Mellor starred in one of the year's most talked-about shows, and in this exclusive chat with OK! he talks about what it meant to him and his family
Will Mellor has had a busy 12 months with a starring role one of the most talked-about TV shows of the year, and a busy UK tour with his former Two Pints star and best friend Ralf Little . The former Hollyoaks actor starred in ITV's Mr Bates vs The Post Office, which scooped the Impact Award and Best Drama Award at this year's National Television Awards.
It has gone better than we could have ever imagined. In the four weeks leading up to filming with Ralph, I actually learned more about him than I did in the 20 years before that. We had real conversations—just sitting in the car and talking. I learned why he is the way he is, why he's guarded, and what he's been through. He shared a lot with me, and I shared a lot with him. It's been amazing seeing how much it resonates with people.
Being nominated for the NTAs and winning two awards—especially the Impact Award and Best Drama—was incredible. Standing on that stage, receiving an award for a show I’m part of, was a truly memorable moment and something my family and I will never forget. Working on Mr Bates vs the Post Office has probably been the highlight of my career so far.
Watching it now, I catch myself critiquing like a judge: I notice if someone’s position isn’t right, or if a heel goes down when it should have been up. It feels like I’ve forgotten it all, but then watching, I realise I remember exactly what’s good and what’s not. All the training comes back—it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but also one of the most rewarding. There’s nothing quite like the adrenaline rush of performing live in front of 10 million people.
What are your plans for Christmas? Do you love it or hate it? What are your favourite family traditions? We’ve started using the airfryer more when cooking big family meals as it’s more energy efficient, plus batch cooking and keeping any leftovers is a great way to reduce energy consumption in the kitchen. But for us, getting a smart meter installed has to be my favourite tip.
