Although it has been warmly received by critics so far, he was missing from the list of nominations for best actor in a drama, with Austin Butler, Brendan Fraser, Bill Nighy, Jeremy Pope and Hugh Jackman battling it out for the top gong instead. The Whale has been expected to make a clean sweep during awards season but only nabbed one nomination – best actor for Brendan Fraser – while Viola Davis scooped up the only nod for The Woman King.
Controversially, there were no female filmmakers tipped for best director at the upcoming ceremony, with all five movies in the category coming from males.
