To get herself up to speed, Wood turned to William Hanson, a 34-year-old Brit who represents a wave of young etiquette experts who are championing and modernizing the subject. Wood discovered Hanson on social media, where he posts bite-size etiquette videos, and then read several of his books; she liked his witty and approachable style of teaching manners.
The day before Hanson and I spoke, he had traveled back to London from Zurich, where a private equity firm had hired him to lead a course in modern business etiquette. “At that firm, the uniform was sort of what I’m wearing today,” said Hanson, indicating his own Crew Clothing quarter-zip sweater. “That’s great—they’re not in suits and ties.
