The first human case of West Nile Virus infection has been reported in Williamson County, according to officials. The Williamson County Cities and Health Distric
The Williamson County Cities and Health District said the patient is a resident in their 50s in the southern part of the county. They were diagnosed with West Nile fever.Symptoms of infection include fever, headache, and body aches, skin rash on the trunk of the body, and swollen lymph nodes. Those 50 or older, as well as those with compromised immune systems, are at higher risk for more severe symptoms.
“Fortunately, most people who contract West Nile virus never develop symptoms, and most people’s risk of getting seriously ill is very low. To be safe, you can take steps to protect yourself from bites by using a repellent that contains DEET,” said Jason Fritz, Integrated Vector Management Program Lead.
“If you develop symptoms of West Nile virus such as severe headache, high fever, stiff neck, confusion, muscle weakness or tremors, or seizures, contact your healthcare provider right away or visit an emergency room," Fritz said.Hays County officials also reported that two mosquito traps in Wimberly tested positive for the virus. They are the first two this year.
“Rainfall within the Central Texas area leads to an increase in standing water, which provides ideal breeding grounds for mosquitos,” said Eric Vangaasbeek, chief environmental health specialist at Hays County Development Services . "We encourage everyone to take proactive steps to prevent mosquito bites by reducing areas of standing water around their homes and properties.
