William Behrends reflects on creating the iconic statue of Mays at 3rd and King
On a summer day in 1999, William Behrends was in Wilmington, N.C., a port city on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, when he driving past a lumberyard and finally found what he had been searching for.Behrends approached him and asked, “Would you like to be Willie Mays ?”
“I mentioned Willie Mays, and his eyes lit up. He was very nice and cooperative about it. We did some sessions together, and he was very, very useful,” Behrends said about the young lumberyard worker. “If you want to honor Willie, that’s where you go. I love that,” said Behrends, whose sister sent him pictures of the tributes.
