Wimbledon Russia ban could see British tennis authorities kicked off tour after £1.65m in fines 🟢 jamesgraysport

“The ATP, in its finding, has shown no recognition of the exceptional circumstances created by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, or the international sporting community and UK Government’s response to that invasion.

The LTA, along with Wimbledon organisers the All England Club , considered asking players to sign a declaration insisting they would not show support for the war during the tournament, but decided that could place the players themselves or their families in danger back home if they were seen to be acquiescing.

“The financial impact of both this fine and the WTA’s fine will have a material impact on the LTA’s ability to develop and host tennis in this country,” the LTA added.understands the LTA has already had to cancel plans for two indoor Challenger tournaments in the UK in 2023, events which are run at a loss but effectively represent an investment of up to £180,000 a time in British tennis thanks to prize money awarded.

Sources at the AELTC insist no decision has yet been made and that they will do so independently of what the tours do or say, but also the idea that British tennis could become alienated from the rest of the food chain is not particularly palatable.
