Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, 21, held her nerve admirably, capitalising on Vondrousova’s 28 unforced errors and seven double faults to sweep her out of the tournament in two swift sets.In recent weeks she has been managing a hip injury, retiring from her match in Berlin last month, but she did not call out the trainer during the match against Bouzas Maneiro.
She credited her opponent though, and said it was not a physical issue that blighted her performance but rather handling the nerves. “I feel like even if you don’t want to think about it you think about it all the time here. I see posters here, my name everywhere. It was an amazing feeling to go back on Centre court.“It’s mixed feelings, I love to be here, I would like to stay also, but I won last year and it was amazing. Yeah, today was really tough. I was nervous at the start and I couldn’t shake it off.“It’s tough to go out defending the title. I was really nervous from the morning. She was also playing good tennis.
