Wind farm community partnership awards over £250,000 to local causes

A community fund has seen more than a quarter of a million pounds donated to local organisations in its first three years.

Established by Banks Renewables, the Kype Muir Community Fund is awarded to causes within a 10km radius of its wind farm in South Lanarkshire.

Amongst the causes benefiting from the fund was Climate Action Strathaven, a charity looking to increase sustainability and climate awareness, which was set up just one month before the firstCommunity councillors from the KMCP, Cllr Susan Kerr from South Lanarkshire Council, representatives from RJ Mcleod and members of Banks Renewables

Other organisations that have previously been awarded vital cash sums include the Lesmahagow Bowls Club, Strathaven Rugby FC and the Sandford & Upper Avondale CommunityGeorge Smith, Chair of the KMCP, said: “We are proud to help our communities take part in the Kype Muir project which has helped our villages with some truly brilliant projects.

Looking forward, the windfarm operators say they are eager to continue working closely with the local community and hope to support more innovative ideas than ever.Robin Winstanley, sustainability and external affairs manager at Banks Renewables, said: “We’re always eager to hear about and support projects of all sizes and would particularly like to see projects of scale being brought forward to match the ambition of the local communities.
