For the first time ever, wind power has become the UK's largest electricity source, generating 30% of the country's power in 2024. Renewables as a whole surpassed 50% for four consecutive quarters, averaging 51% for the year. This milestone comes as the UK bids farewell to coal power, phasing it out entirely in September 2024. While Britain makes strides in decarbonizing its energy grid, natural gas remains a significant component of electricity generation, heating, and boilers.

Wind power overtook natural gas to become – for the first time ever – the UK’s largest source of electricity generation for a full year, the National Energy System Operator NESO said on Tuesday. Last year, wind was the largest source of electricity generation for the first year ever, accounting for 30%, NESO said in its 2024 electricity review.

Britain became the first G7 country to have phased out coal. “This was a major milestone on the journey to a net-zero electricity system with coal accounting for just 0.6% of electricity generation in 2024,” NESO said today. Power generation from renewable energy sources was set to exceed fossil fuel-powered generation in the UK in 2024, for the first time ever, energy think tank Ember said in a report last month.
