People and their descendants from the Caribbean share their stories of coming to the UK
Gemma Collins is co-founder of the Southport African Caribbean Heritage Association formed in 2022. They’re holding a series of interviews to capture stories of people who came to the UK from the Caribbean or were born here who are from the Windrush Generation.
"They spoke about the cold and could never get warm. My dad, especially, wanted to go back home, but it was not an option. "My dad is a successful businessman, is in his 70s and still working in accountancy and has employed many people over the years". "What it was like for them, what experiences did they have and what they were leaving behind. We really want to know and to capture this, a lot of our generations are getting older and we want to capture this history before it’s gone".
Gemma said: "We meet regularly and hold coffee clubs every month. We were holding socials, but we've come away from that and we're doing different events which are advertised via Facebook, Instagram and a WhatsApp group.
