The Wing Luke Museum will proceed with 'Confronting Hate Together,' an exhibit that led to employees walking out in protest.
"After deep consideration and reflection, the Black Heritage Society of Washington State, the Washington State Jewish Historical Society, and the Wing Luke Museum have, in solidarity, agreed to proceed with theexhibit," the WSJHS said via email. "We will relaunch the exhibit with the goal of June 30, 2024 to make additions to the content by offering additional framing on its genesis, the initial public reaction, and the history of our communities working together.
"Though recent events have caused significant harm, we are undeterred. We are open to learn from each other, hear each other’s stories, and strive toward a world with no hate. By acknowledging the complexity of this work, the intent was and is to encourage others to have open, inclusive conversations that come from our understanding and empathy for one another.
In the aforementioned Instagram post on May 23, the employee group said, "We love the Wing Luke Museum and are consistently honored to steward the stories of our community members, many of whom have experienced the destructive harm of white supremacy, genocide, and violence that parallels the experience of Palestinians today. Our solidarity with Palestine should be reflected in our AA/NHPI institutions.
"The employees’ grievances are confined only to the Jewish aspects of the exhibit, much of it drawn from the archives of American Jewish Committee, which has been fighting antisemitism since its founding 118 years ago. The protesters’ statements echo the same anti-Zionist and, in many instances, outright anti-Jewish tropes that have been heard since Hamas terrorists attacked Israel on October 7.
