MPs have claimed the Treasury has dialled back on engagement since the return from summer recess

Rebel Labour MPs are stepping up their lobbying of the Treasury in the hope a Government reset following the departure of Sue Gray will open the way to delaying the cut to winter fuel payments.

But rebel MPs are said to still be hopeful that the Chancellor could dial back on the plans at the Budget, with one claiming they “held onto hope” that she could delay the cuts by six months.they were “not convinced” that the promotion of Mr McSweeney would lead to a rethink in No10. “It’s not going away. And that’s that is our message we would like to send to the Labour Party. This is just the beginning, and we’ll leave those stone unturned, and by any means necessary, we’ll be campaigning on this issue.”

He also urged those at the rally to come “face to face with Labour MPs” in the run-up to the Budget and “tell them we’re not voting for you when you cut our benefits”, adding: “I think if we do that, I think we can turn this around.” They also argue that the most vulnerable pensioners will be encouraged to take up pension credit, which will qualify them for hte payment of between £200-300.

Mr Miliband responded: “The people who should be apologising are the last government that left this country in a total mess, a £22 billion black hole. Mr Starmer addressed concerns about cutting the winter fuel allowance in a speech to the Labour Party conference last month, admitting some have lost faith in his party due to the policy.
