The UK is bracing for disruptive winter weather, with two amber alerts issued for snow and ice across Greater Manchester and other regions. The warnings come just days after devastating floods, adding to the challenges faced by communities.

Wintry weather is predicted to cause major disruption in the UK and across Greater Manchester , just days after devastating floods. The Met Office has issued two amber alerts , both impacting Greater Manchester . An amber warning for snow and ice covers Manchester, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, and Trafford, as well as southern parts of Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, and Wigan boroughs. This warning is in effect from 6pm on Saturday (January 4) to midday on Sunday.

The Met Office warns that snow and freezing rain will likely lead to disruption to transport and some other services. They emphasize a 'good chance' of power cuts, along with disruptions to roads, railways, and airport runways. Untreated pavements and cycle paths are likely to be impassable, with a risk of falling on ice. This warning also covers Cheshire and Merseyside, as well as parts of the Midlands and Wales. A separate amber warning for snow, valid from 9pm on Saturday to 11.59pm on Sunday, covers northern areas of Greater Manchester, including parts of Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, and Wigan boroughs. Here, snow is 'expected to lead to disruption', according to the Met Office. This warning also encompasses most of Cumbria, Lancashire, Yorkshire, and the North East. These warnings follow less severe yellow weather warnings previously issued by the Met Office. A yellow warning for ice is in force from 4pm today (Friday) until 10am on Saturday. Another yellow weather warning for snow and ice, from midday on Saturday to 11.59pm on Sunday, also covers all of Greater Manchester, plus most of England and Wales. This comes as Greater Manchester recovers from the New Year's floods, with some roads still closed while clean-up operations are underway. The UK Health Security Agency has also issued a cold weather alert until January 8 as temperatures plummet over the next few days. Temperatures in Manchester are expected to fall to 2C tonight, 0C on Saturday night, and 1C on Sunday night
