Many area residents are not too happy with the change to state law, while some see the benefits for safer roadways.
Starting in June, Alabamians could receive a citation from law enforcement if holding a cell phone while driving.DOTHAN, Ala. - Starting in June, Alabamians could receive a citation from law enforcement if holding a cell phone while driving.
Stanley Jackson, a Wiregrass area resident, is one of many not too happy with the change to state law. “To me, it’s my vehicle, it’s my decision and I want to drive with one hand while I talk on the phone. I look at it like it’s my right. To me, it’s an overstep,” Jackson expressed. The ‘Hands-Free’ law is a secondary offense, meaning law enforcement must see you violating another traffic offense first before pulling you over and handing out a citation.“I also see cops violating that law. It’s kind of like a double jeopardy thing. To me, it’s wrong for me, it’s wrong for the law. I would like them to address it in that motion as well,” Jacksons said.
“We encourage everyone to drive hands-free. Make sure you don’t have distractions while driving, because there are so many multi-tasks you have to do while driving.” Lieutenant Owens said.“Newer cars have features that would put your phone on do not disturb and send the automatic text to let the people know that you are driving. I received that from many people and it works, you still get the notification and it doesn’t let the text message hang out there.
