Around 2.9-million votes had been counted before 9am on Thursday morning.
South Africans went to the polls on Wednesday to elect the sixth democratic administration in a day marred by bad weather, protests and worrying potential irregularities.
Two potential cases of “double voting” had been brought to the attention of the commission, in which voters were allowed to cast more than one vote at two different polling stations. The IEC said as part of finalising the results, it would assess data from its scanners, forms filled out by voters when voting outside their districts as well as the voters roll to identify risks.
