The iconic gig took place almost 35 years ago
A view of the crowd at an outdoor concert given by British rock group The Stone Roses at Spike Island, Widnes the event took place on the Whitsun bank holiday of May 1990 and remains one of the most iconic of its generation. Seen by almost 30,000 fans, Andy Fyfe reported from Spike Island for NME and at the time said
"Spike Island was to be the Roses’ defining statement, a celebration of not only their own success, but of an entire youth culture." A year earlier in May 1989, The Stone Roses released their self-titled album which stormed its way into the musical history books. Made in Manchester, the band's eponymous debut featured tracks such as I Wanna Be Adored, Waterfall and I Am The Resurrection,The Spike Island gig itself had issues, with the facilities and organisation lacking and the PA system not being up to scratch for the size of the concert.
