🇳🇱 Will need more fluidity against France 🇳🇱 Rattled by SUI's pressing in group stages 🇳🇱 Young squad members could prove crucial vs. FRA ArtdeRoche on the NED's WEURO2022 quarter-final chances... with Miedema back in the starting line-up
It was as if the Euro 2022 knockout stages had already started for the Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden and Portugal heading into their final round of Group C matches on Sunday, as any of the four could still qualify.
Sweden did their job, they were 3-0 up at half-time against Portugal and went on to win 5-0, topping the group to secure a last-eight game against whoever finishes runners-up to the French . The standoff lasted longer with the Swiss at Bramall Lane. From a corner, Stefanie van der Gragt’s header at the back post was diverted in by a defender to put the Netherlands 1-0 up on 49 minutes. As Portugal did, Switzerland took the initiative from minute one and were ready to play higher up the pitch, unsettling the Dutch.
Jill Roord, who started on the right but switched with Danielle van de Donk as the No 10, dropped to create another option, but captain Lia Walti monitored the situation as well as ever against her former Arsenal team-mate Roord. The Swiss quickly moved the ball back to their defenders before trying to move up the pitch and winning fouls on both occasions, taking away any rhythm the Netherlands hoped to build.got them back into control as she roamed away from the No 9 position to impact the game., it has been evident in her performances for years.
