Vitor Pereira is set to become the new manager of Wolves, but faces a challenging task with a limited budget as the club battles relegation.
Vitor Pereira will be operating on an extremely limited budget at Wolves in the January transfer window. The 56-year-old is closing in on being appointed the successor to Gary O’Neil at Molineux after his sacking on Sunday (15 December).Wolves are confident of sealing Pereira’s appointment after paying his Al Shabab release clause – which stands at around £800,000.
However, the Midlands club are in a precarious financial situation despite selling a number of big-ticket players in recent transfer windows. It is believed Gary O’Neil would have been faced with a limited January budget had he stayed in post – and the situation has now been exacerbated by his sack pay-off. Wolves are likely to run close to breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) once again this term despite selling Max Kilman and Pedro Neto in the off-season.The defence had been a problem for O’Neil prior to his exit – with Yerson Mosquera, Bastien Meupiyou and Santiago Bueno all currently injured.Toti Gomes and Craig Dawson are the only fit senior centre-backs on the books at Molineux. Wolves have conceded the most goals in the Premier League this term (40) and sit comfortably inside the relegation zone after 16 games. The Midlands club are five points adrift of safety with games against Leicester, Man United and Tottenham to come before the end of 2024. Pereira, who has been a manager target for Everton in the past, has won titles in China, Greece and Portugal but is now set to take his first job in English football
