A young woman who was dismissed from her GP practice after repeatedly requesting pain medication was later diagnosed with incurable cancer. Steph Thomas, 28, was removed from the Hope Farm Medical Centre in Ellesmere Port, allegedly due to a breakdown in the GP/patient relationship.

A young woman who was banned from her GP after repeatedly asking for pain killing medication was later diagnosed with an incurable cancer, it has emerged. Steph Thomas, 28, was removed from the Hope Farm Medical Centre in Ellesmere Port and told it was because of a 'breakdown in the GP/patient relationship' following her demands for more morphine.

Around nine months later in September this year she was then diagnosed with incurable cancer that had spread so far that its origin could not be established. Doctors previously thought that her symptoms were as a result of a chronic bladder condition which she suffered from. The keen horse rider, from Ellemere Port in Cheshire, lives with Fowler's Syndrome, which is a chronic illness that affects the bladder and causes difficulty in passing urine. In 2021, she noticed a change in her symptoms, and her GP prescribed a course of morphine to manage the pain. However, doctors told Steph they believed the pain was caused by her pre-existing condition. Ms Thomas' mother, Stacey Thomas, 46, said: 'They put her on a really high dose of pain relief, and she was complaining it wasn't working and she was needing more. In March 2023, the GP then sent a letter to Ms Thomas telling her they would be reducing her morphine every two weeks, with a view to stop it completely. She was also told that if she continued to request prescriptions early it would 'result in your removal from the GP practice list due a breakdown in GP/Patient relationship'. In January 2024, the threat came to a head and the 28-year-old was removed from the practice's patient lis
