A TikTok user stumbled upon a chilling memento from Jimmy Savile's past while helping her elderly neighbor clear out their garage. The discovery sparked a debate about judging historical figures in light of their later crimes.
A woman was forced to preface her TikTok post with a trigger warning after making an unsettling find while helping to clear out her elderly neighbor's garage. Molly Thomas shared images of the item in question, which had belonged to her former media production worker neighbor since the 1960s. 'Didn't expect this today!' she wrote. 'Turns out my old sound engineer neighbor had something to do with a 1962 recording by he who shall not be named.
Bit icky, he definitely didn't know about the darker side at that time.' She then showcased a BBC black and white picture postcard featuring Jimmy Savile and his handwritten note, 'PTO' . On the reverse was Savile's writing: 'This looks like me but actually it's a rare pic of AHAB. Cheers, Jimmy.' The 'AHAB' in the inscription was a reference to Savile's novelty cover version of Ahab the Arab, released in the same year as the original - recorded by Ray Stevens. One TikTok user responded sympathetically: 'It's not your neighbor's fault, Savile fooled the nation.' To which Molly replied: 'I don't think he'd have worked with him if he'd known at the time. It's one of the people I've never heard a story about because I'm guessing he wasn't pleased he recorded him.' Another person joked: 'Now then, now then. Not everyday you find something like that.' A third commenter recalled a similar experience, saying: 'I found one of my Grandma stood next to him. To be fair she looked miffed in it.' Meanwhile, a fourth individual, appearing to misunderstand the situation, spoke out in defense of Molly's neighbor: 'Stop being woke, it only means something today, it's unfair to judge someone when you don't know a backstory. Jimmy Savile kissed my mother on the hand once, but I know the backstory.' In response to this, Molly said: 'I know the backstory. It was a note acknowledging they'd worked together. I'm allowed to feel gross about it knowing what we know now and it was an unexpected find. Not sure that's woke.' Following his death in 2011 aged 84, it came to light that Savile, who had been honored with a knighthood in 1990 for his charitable work, had sexually abused hundreds of individuals, including many children. Police suspect Savile might have been the most prolific sex offender in British history
