A Cornwall resident opted for an unexpected journey, flying over 2,000 miles to Manchester via Spain to pick up her new car, discovering that flights were significantly cheaper than the train.

A woman from Cornwall took an unusual route to pick up her new car, flying over 2,000 miles to Manchester via Spain. Kristina Coulson, from Lansallos near Fowey, needed a new car after her previous one was written off following a crash in December. When she researched train options from Cornwall to Crewe, Cheshire, where she purchased the car, she was shocked to find fares could cost up to £203 each. Inspired by a Facebook group dedicated to documenting extreme day trips, Ms.

Coulson decided to explore alternative options. She discovered that flights for two people from Newquay to Málaga, Spain, and then Málaga to Manchester, cost around £108. Despite the added distance, Ms. Coulson found the detour worthwhile. She explained that the train journey would have been impossible for her to manage alone due to back issues sustained in the accident. 'I just did a search engine for the day I needed to go and the prices were coming up anything from £89 each, up to £203 each,' she shared. Ms. Coulson and her husband flew from Newquay to Málaga, then onto Manchester, returning to the UK by midnight. They stayed overnight at the Holiday Express on the airport grounds. The Department for Transport declined to comment on the specific case but emphasized its commitment to reforming the railway system. They acknowledged the complexities of current fare structures and stated their aim to simplify fares for easier passenger understanding.
