A woman who was caught trying to smuggle cannabis into a Nottingham prison in her bra has been sent to jail. Nottingham Crown Court heard how security staff found the package, which is worth £250 on the streets but up to £6,600 behind bars, when they checked Leah Burke who had come to visit an inmate at Lowdham Grange.
Jailing her for 15 months, Judge Nirmal Shant KC said: “The amount found was not for personal use but was intended for a person who was threatening you and for extensive supply within the prison system. Although it was a relatively small amount it had a much higher value in prison into the thousands.
Lucky Thandi, prosecuting, said staff at Lowdham Grange were alerted to possible “contraband” being smuggled into the prison by the defendant on February 4, this year. She said they asked to carry out a through search of her and she told them she “wanted to go home”. “A search was then carried out at the defendant’s address in Liverpool and amounts of ketamine and cocaine were found along with digital scales. The values of the drugs seized inside prison were estimated to be worth as much as £6,600.”
