Becky Shaw's beloved Indian runner duck, Margaret, was unable to walk due to a viral infection causing an enlarged spleen. A GoFundMe campaign raised over £435 to cover Margaret's vet bills, saving the duck and bringing joy to Becky and her son Jacob. Margaret holds special significance as the last reminder of Becky's late brother, Daniel, who passed away last July.
A woman from Ashton was brought to tears after her online petition raised enough money to save her poorly duck. Becky Shaw's beloved duck Margaret was unable to walk after an infection caused him to have an enlarged spleen. The Indian runner duck, who was named before his sex was known, is now back on his feet after a GoFundMe page racked up £435 to pay for vet bills.
For owner Becky and her son Jacob, 12, the thought of losing Margaret was unbearable, as she was all they had left of Becky's late brother Daniel Hodge, who died last July. Speaking to the Daily Star, 34-year-old Becky said: 'My brother was such a beautiful person. Life is really hard since he passed away and the ducks are a massive part of mine and Jacob's lives. 'Every time I look at him I see my brother in Margaret. The ducks mean so much to us. I have grown to love them so much. The people who donated are beautiful people and so kind, this means so much to us. 'I was literally crying my eyes out when I seen him stand up and try his best to walk and then to see his progress walking and now running with all his friends I can’t even put into words how happy I am that he is still here and back to full health.' Daniel had bought five duck eggs a month before the 38-year-old died from a heart attack, with one of the four eggs that hatched being Margaret, named by Jacob. In the GoFundMe post, Becky wrote: 'I can’t beat the thought of my son loosing him when there his pride and joy and the only piece of Daniel he has left.' The ordeal was so distressing for Becky that she couldn't sleep and when Margaret lost his ability to walk, she had to isolate him from the other ducks in fear they would attack him. Luckily, Becky, who works as an assistant at Co-op, was able to use the money raised on a blood test, which revealed Margaret was suffering from a viral infection and was soon treated by medication. In an update post, Becky wrote that Margaret is now 'back to normal running around the garden'. She wrote: 'I feel my brother from up above definitely sent some heaven love.
