A Woman's Hour listener we're calling Jane reveals her experience of kleptomania.

“I have been hiding a terrible and shameful secret which has plagued my life for as long as I remember. It’s a topic that is never discussed and shrouded in shame.”

After initially getting away with the theft, Jane continued to shoplift “practically every day after school on the way home.” “For the last two or three years I haven't been able to stop at all”, Jane says. “When the cost-of-living crisis began, trying to find food that was actually enjoyable got more and more complicated. Also, my job, particularly at the moment, is pretty stressful. Education is in a bit of a state, and teachers bear the brunt of it. So, I do feel that stress has got a lot to do with it.

“Eventually they escorted me out of the shop, past the tills. It was so utterly humiliating! And all the time I was just apologising, ‘I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry.’ I took the next day off work because I was still so shaken by it.”Jane eventually went to her GP and later received a diagnosis of kleptomania from a psychiatrist. She started a course of therapy through the NHS. But after two therapists left in quick succession, she decided she didn’t want to continue.

Dr Sequeira says that it can be common for adults with kleptomania to have faced difficult circumstances in childhood.
