A woman driving with two children has fought back against an alleged carjacker who jumped in her car while it was stopped in traffic in Broadmeadows. 7NEWS

But the woman got the door open before it was locked and climbed into the front passenger seat as the man started to drive along Pascoe Vale Rd. Police said the pair struggled for control of the car, before it crossed onto the wrong side of the road and crashed into a railway fence. Multiple motorists who witnessed the incident rushed to help the woman and the children after the crash.Overnight on Wednesday, detectives interviewed an 18-year-old Broadmeadows man and charged him with carjacking, theft of motor vehicle and other offences.
