Police officers tried to run two dogs over as they savaged two victims in the street
When police officers arrived at the scene, they would find the dog 'mauling' a screaming Ms Walpole. A man then kicked the dogs and threw them into the street, at which stage they bit Ms Mohammed once again to the lower leg as she was being helped into a police car.
She sustained 'catastrophic injuries' to her arm during the ordeal, including being left with chunks of flesh missing and her bones exposed in the area where she had been savaged, and had to undergo two operations during an eight-day stay in hospital. PCs ultimately took the drastic step of trying to hit the dogs with their patrol cars due to their unpredictable nature. Ms Mohammed later told officers that she had been present at Hayes' home when Ms Walpole arrived, at which stage an argument erupted. The dogs then became agitated, with one latching on to her arm. She recalled one of the pets 'ragging her' around on the floor, leaving her 'worried that she was going to die'. Ms Walpole was then reported to have intervened by punching and kicking the Staffies, at which stage she became the target of their aggression. The second victim recalled them 'grabbing hold of her and ragging her around whilst she did her best to get away from them' and said she 'had never felt so scared in her life'. She later spent three days in hospital after suffering a series of lacerations to her lower lip, left arm and right hand, leaving her requiring cosmetic surgery. The dogs were reportedly owned by a breeder who used the 'vulnerable' Hayes as a sitter. Paul Lewis, defending, told the court that his 42-year-old client was 'vulnerable and susceptible to others' and 'does not hold herself out to be a suitable person to look after dogs'. She was also said to have a history of mental health problems, as well as alcohol misuse issues. Hayes admitted two counts of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control which caused injury. She was handed a 14-month imprisonment suspended for two years and told to complete a rehabilitation activity requirement of up to 20 days, plus a six-month alcohol treatment requirement. Appearing in the dock wearing a black hoodie bearing the words 'choose love', she was also banned from keeping dogs for life and mouthed 'thank you' as she was spared an immediate prison sentence. The court will rule upon an application from the prosecution for the destruction of the two dogs next month. Sentencing, Judge Neil Flewitt KC said that the attack had resulted in a 'horrendous scene of these two dogs savaging these two women', the consequences of which were 'dreadful'. He added: 'I have seen videos. The dogs were clearly agitated and must have been a risk and threat to other people living in the area. 'Jordelle Mohammed has suffered awful injuries. I have no doubt that she will be scarred for life by them, physically and mentally, as a result of the trauma that she went through. The reality is that you were ill equipped to look after and control these dogs and ill equipped to resist the pressure brought to bear on you to look after them.'
