A woman claims her ex-boyfriend is blaming her for accidentally throwing away a hard drive containing his £569 million Bitcoin fortune. The drive is now believed to be lost in a Newport Council landfill.
A woman who accidentally threw away her boyfriend's £569 million Bitcoin fortune in a landfill says it's now lost, but insists it's not her fault. The hard drive, which would now be worth more than half a billion pounds, is thought to be in a Newport Council tip. James Howells' ex-girlfriend Halfina Eddy-Evans admitted taking the hard drive to the tip but claimed James asked her to. She said he asked her to take a bin bag to the tip, and she dumped it without realizing the drive was inside.
Howells said he had sold most of the parts and put the drive in a junk drawer, where he forgot about it for three years. He claims the sound of his laptop fan running while he mined Bitcoin annoyed Halfina, who told him to stop. Halfina said: 'It looks like he's blaming me, but I don't think he really is, not that we are even talking now.' However, James said he has narrowed down the hard drive to an area of 100,000 tonnes. Last month James said he was suing the council for just over £495 million in damages for 'withholding my property'. Newport City Council said: 'We have been contacted multiple times since 2013 about the possibility of retrieving a piece of IT hardware said to be in our landfill site. The council has told Mr Howells multiple times that excavation is not possible under our environmental permit.
