Israel has since launched hundreds of air strikes on Gaza in retaliation for Hamas' attack, as an estimated 220 hostages remain captive. In a statement on Twitter, Senator Wong urged Israeli military to pause on hostilities in order to end what she described as a humanitarian crisis in Gaza. "The humanitarian situation in Gaza is dire and human suffering is widespread," Ms Wong wrote.
"The way Israel exercises its rights to defend itself matters. It matters to civilians throughout the region, and it matters to Israel's ongoing security," Ms Wong wrote. "Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people and undermines the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people."
