One of the main contractors on a £7bn Yorkshire mine project is cutting hundreds of jobs on the scheme, The Yorkshire Post can reveal.

The number of people employed on the Woodsmith Project in North Yorkshire by shaft sinking contractor Redpath is dropping from 730 to 370 – a loss of 360 roles. Consultations with affected workers took place over the weekend. It comes after project developer Anglo American announced in May it was to 'slow the development' of the new fertiliser mine, which had previously been due to open in 2027.

It is intended the product will be sold as a fertiliser suitable for organic use that can boost crop yields and aid more sustainable farming. In May, Anglo American announced a shock decision to save costs by slowing work on the scheme, despite nearly 18 miles of the 23-mile tunnel already being built. It was part of the mining giant’s response to a takeover bid by rival corporation BHP which has now been prevented.
