The 17th-century pub is being given a new start
Building work has begun to rescue a 300-year-old pub in the heart of Northampton. The Old Black Lion, in Marefair, is due to be restored to its former glory and provide hospitality for visitors at a cost of £3.5 million.
Some £2m of funding was awarded to restore the historic pub from the National Heritage Lottery Fund in 2013. A further £315,000 was put forward by WNC from it's £24.9m Towns Fund grant from the government. Funding has also been granted by the taxpayer, the Architectural Heritage Fund and West Northamptonshire Development Corporation. The refurbishment should be completed by Spring next year, with the pub reopening shortly afterwards.
